Visits to Château Bouscassé - 32400 Maumusson-Laguian

Brief presentation of the estate:

“My philosophy is primarily governed by a series of uncompromising choices, all leading to the unique style of Château Montus, Château Bouscassé or Torus. These now legendary wines are the result of hard work and the constant search for singularity where the smallest detail can become all-important”.

Alain Brumont is a man who belongs to the land, a generous winemaker who brought Madiran to the attention of the world. These wines are born from the passionate spirit of a proud Gascony native who, quite unusually, knows all the vine plants on his Montus and Bouscassé estates. The man is genuine, passionate, talkative, evoking his truanting childhood, his career and his work (a model of its kind), his Madiran and his fight to improve quality in wines from the south-west of France. Above all, he speaks of Tannat – the grape variety that has often been criticized in the past, but with which he has produced his finest wines.

Alain Brumont inherited Château Bouscassé vineyards from his father in 1979, which today covers 120 hectares. He purchased the badly rundown Château Montus in 1980. It was around this time that he understood that Tannat had the potential to produce exceptional wines and he began to develop the Brumont method.

Today, the rewards of his work are recognised by the entire wine profession, by journalists, oenologists and sommeliers. He is acknowledged as the icon of the south-west and among the top ten in the world. Alain Brumont is a visionary and twenty years ahead of his time.

Brief presentation of the estate :

The Clos Fardet vineyards belong to the land of Madiran, in the south-west of France. Madiran is a high quality wine, with its roots anchored in a land and a grape variety (Tannat), both with exceptional potential. Today, the knowledge inherited from our ancestors and progress made in winemaking allow us exploit this great terroir to its full potential and produce a great wine.

I created "Clos Fardet" in 1998, on the vineyard restructured by my grandfather Eugene Moutoué Fardet in 1961. As I was aware of its potential, I started vinifying the grapes at the estate and created a new Madiran wine. Today the vineyards cover 3 hectares: to be continued…

The cellar was built in 1923 by my great-grandfather Romain Clot and houses the famous “cuvon-press” (press basin) where I still vinify Madiran using manual cap punching. Then as soon as malolactic fermentation has begun, the wine is matured for twelve months in oak barrels and bottled the following spring.

Today we produce a unique Madiran vintage and Tannat rosé wines with no GI.

Brief presentation of the estate :

Cru du Paradise has been in existence for three generations. It is one of Madiran’s oldest vineyards. 27 hectares of Madiran and Pacherenc Vic-Bilh sweet and dry vines are planted on clay-limestone and small pebble soils, mostly with a south, southwest exposure.

The vineyards cover the communes of Saint Lanne and Madiran.

The policy of winemaker Jacques Maumus is to produce exclusively high quality wines that are regularly rewarded by the Hachette Wine Guide.

Brief presentation of the estate :

The estate is located in the village of Soublecause near the D935 (Tarbes / Bordeaux axe) and has been using organic cultivation methods since 2002. The three hectares of vines yield three wine vintages, each reflecting their different lands of origin: sandy clay loam with large pebbles, silty clay and clay-limestone. As a long-time wine enthusiast, I like to make light, honest wines, with a strong identity that retain their true nature. My production is FR BIO-07 Agrocert certified.

Rebuilt by Auguste Vigneau in 1955, the Domaine Pichard found a new lease of life when it was taken over by Rod Cork and Jean Sentilles in 2006. On one unique12-hectare plot of land containing vines of over 40 years of age, with a south exposure facing the Pyrenees, we produce typical Madiran and Pacherenc wines with good aging potential and a lot of character. Come and discover them and share our passion.
